Knowledge of the metabolic pathways of a drug or drug class is critical
in the drug development process. Mass spectrometry provides a means to
specifically identify metabolites formed in small quantities in in
vitro or in vivo systems. Both LC and MS conditions must be worked out
to adequately separate the parent compound and metabolites. In cases
where the metabolic pathways are known, specific metabolites may be
anticipated. In these cases the mass spectrometer may be tuned to look
for these specific compounds. In cases where the metabolic pathways are
not known, searches for all possible metabolites may be in order. In
either case, the process of identifying such metabolites is time
intensive for the operator and the LC/MS instrument. In addition, each
project aimed at the identification of metabolites will be unique in
terms of the time required for completion. Accordingly, cost estimates
can be generated on a case-by-case basis, and charges for this service
are determined at an hourly rate.
