This program comprises three thematic areas that are aligned with one overall goal: to lower the cancer cell's threshold for apoptosis, or natural cell death, thus promoting the biological destruction of cancer. Experimental Therapeutics members are focused on understanding: 1) the mechanisms by which epigenetic alterations contribute to the genesis and chemoresistance of cancer, and how such alterations can be exploited clinically; 2) how monoclonal antibody therapy can be used to enhance cell susceptibility to cancer chemotherapy; and 3) how novel chemotherapeutic combinations can target survival and chemotherapy resistance pathways in the cancer cell. These themes require strong interprogrammitic collaboration that has led to a substantial increase in interactive grants, clinical protocols and publications in scientific journals.
