The global objective of this program is to elucidate molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying carcinogenesis and develop novel strategies for cancer prevention through chemoprevention and nutrition. To achieve this goal, researchers: 1) characterize molecular and cellular changes induced by chemical, physical, hormonal and infectious agents that contribute to neoplastic transformation and multi-stage carcinogenesis in experimental models and humans; 2) develop and characterize novel agents for cancer chemoprevention and gauge their safety, efficacy and mechanisms using in vitro and preclinical models; 3) identify dietary and nutritional components that enhance or inhibit the carcinogenic cascade; and 4) implement cancer-prevention studies in humans with emphasis on those who are at greater risk due to exposure to cancer-promoting agents, genetic predisposition or the presence of premalignant lesions. The programs translational research component has grown to include more than 2,000 participants at Ohio State involved in chemoprevention or nutrition studies under the direction of program members.
