Since coming to Ohio State in January 2002 from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Dr. Paskett has served as a professor in the School of Public Health and as co-leader of the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Control Program. An expert in women's and minority issues, she is also director of the Diversity Enhancement Program at The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, and she holds the Marion N. Rowley Designated Chair in Cancer Research. She earned her MPH in 1984 at the University of Utah and her PhD in epidemiology and health services in 1989 from the University of Washington. As a health sciences professional involved in multiple peer-reviewed and grant-funded cancer control studies, Paskett finds ways to help others prevent cancer by designing intervention strategies that persuade people to change their behavior and take control of their health. She also focuses heavily on survivorship, or helping people improve their quality of life after cancer diagnosis and treatment. From this standpoint she has conducted much research on lymphedema, a chronic and potentially debilitating condition that occurs in many patients who undergo lymph node dissection as part of their cancer treatment.
A major initiative in the Cancer Control Program is the Center for Population Health and Health Disparities grant which focuses on the goal of understanding why high rates of cervical cancer incidence and mortality are observed in Appalachia Ohio.
The Appalachian Community Cancer Network (ACCN) is a National Cancer Institute-funded research initiative to reduce cancer health disparities in the Appalachian region through community participation in education, research and training. |
