Dr. Lairmore is a professor and chair of the Department of Veterinary Biosciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State since February 2002. He is trained in molecular virology and veterinary pathology and is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. Lairmore earned his PhD in 1987 from Colorado State University and then performed postdoctoral research at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Ga., where he became nationally recognized for his studies of human retroviruses. Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection causes adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and a variety of immune-mediated disorders. Lairmore's research seeks to understand mechanisms by which these proteins influence HTLV-1 replication and cellular gene expression during natural infection. In 1990, he joined The Ohio State University to continue his research. Since then, he has been continuously funded from extramural sources, including a $9.8 million program project grant from the National Cancer Institute entitled "Retroviral Models of Lymphocyte Transformation and Disease." He is a member of the OSUCCC's Viral Oncogenesis Program and the author or co-author of more than 120 publications in scientific journals.
